Some thoughts on photography…

A piece that I did about a year ago

A piece that I did about a year ago (not photo shopped, I did the effects by hand, look closely!)

You know what I love about photography? Light itself is the medium! How amazing is it that I get to work with light to create beautiful images. I love that God lets me do photography and that I get to explore that aspect of his creation.

I get to tell a story with photography and I love that. I love that I get to be a part of capturing people’s memories - the beautiful parts of life that we want to remember. But photography can also be useful as a documentary tool to teach people about the injustices in the world, so that they can pray about it and also see how they can help. I love that a picture really does tell a thousand words of a story. You can experience so many elements of this world that you otherwise could never fathom without a photograph.

Right now my favorite part of photography is capturing all the sweet moments of my little boy growing up. Other times, like in the past, I’ve used photos to create magical images that I’ve dreamed up in my head - a little world that I can open up in hopes that other people will enjoy it as well.

Hey all! Just wanted to let you know that if you e-mail me and don’t hear back for a few days, it’s because I’ve had my new baby boy, Jack! We are supposed to have him on Feb 11th…just two days! Please be patient with me and I’ll get back to you ASAP, your e-mails are important to me. :) Also, once I get back in action after having the little guy, I will be adding many new images to my portfolio! Being a mom and doing photography will be my new full time job.  I’m excited to have much more time to dedicate to my photography business!

Little Jack will be one dapper guy - some tie onesies that I made for him.

Graduation!

I apologize for such a long time that has passed since my last post.  Although I haven’t updated, I’ve been busy busy busy with lots of photo shoots and finishing my art degree from Westminster College.  I walk during Commencement this Saturday!  My grandpa and Aunt Jenny are coming out from Indiana just for the event.  I’m very excited.  Hooray!

class-of-09

announcement

Instead of going with the bland graduation announcements that the college provided, I ordered my own through this wonderful etsy seller, westwillow.  I highly recommend them for any announcements or invitations that you may need.  They have very nice designs and were quick as well as wonderful to work with.

See you soon!

P.S. You may have noticed a “facelift” to the site.  My handsome husband Dax and I are working on giving my site a makeover.  Expect new exciting changes soon, as well many more updates to the galleries and blog posts now that I’m done with college and have a little more of that elusive “free time.” ;)

City Weekly Article and update.

The following article was in the City Weekly for the opening of the Alpine Art show as part of the Gallery Stroll.  The show is still up until April 2nd if you didn’t get a chance to check it out!

“Using a fusion of film and digital, artist Lauren Hansen will premiere her vintage niche of funky black and white photos at this month’s Gallery Stroll.  A newcomer to the gallery stroll, Hansen enters the Utah art scene with a unique angle on ordinary objects and special moments. ‘I am inspired by vintage objects and all things with a nostalgic feel.  To me, they evoke a magic and allure from the charm of the past.  I try to capture that charm,’ Hansen explains.

Her whimsical perspective captures an innocent quality in her subjects, creating a simple aesthetic beauty.  The soft edges of the black and white film produce an antiquated aura, while her chosen subjects offer an unconventional setting.  Boston Terrier meets old dial phone her her photo titled Oscar; tattoo meets ivory tux in picture titled Manda.

‘There are times when I see something cool and simply capture it.’ Her work is subtly expressive- and fun. [Kris Heitkamp]

The opening of the gallery was great fun!  Alpine Art threw a classy party. :) Thanks to all of those who came out to show their support.  I have already sold a few pieces, which is quite encouraging.  There are still prints as well as framed images available so be sure to head on over if you’d like a photo from me!

Other than that, I am currently very busy with maternity, band, and wedding photo shoots.  However, I am always enthusiastic about new work!  I will post some new images soon.  In addition, I am entering the upcoming juried Spring art show at Westminster College, as well as getting ready for my Senior art show.  Both shows will hang this month.  Stay posted!
